UK business energy monitoring, ranked and compared

Top 10 energy monitoring software in the UK

Every serious platform on the UK market, compared on the things brochures blur: real-time versus day+1 data, device-level versus meter-level visibility, fuels covered, and what it actually costs. Capability flags checked against each vendor's own site in July 2026.

At a glance

What energy monitoring actually is

Business energy monitoring is the continuous collection of half-hourly (or finer) consumption data from your meters, presented through a platform that surfaces anomalies, validates supplier bills against contract, and produces statutory reports such as SECR, ESOS and the GHG Protocol Scope 1 and Scope 2 splits.

The market splits into two camps that the brochures blur. Meter-level platforms read your utility meters (half-hourly electricity, AMR gas) and excel at bills, budgets and compliance. Device-level platforms add sensors below the meter, on circuits and individual machines, and tell you which asset caused the spike. Knowing which camp a vendor is really in is half the evaluation, which is why the tables below make it a named column.

The ranking

The top 10, ranked

How we ranked, and our interest declared: Purely Insights is our own platform and we rank it first. Here is why you can still use this list: every competitor capability below was checked against that vendor's own published material in July 2026, the contested claims were independently re-checked, and where a rival is stronger on a given axis we say so (ClearVUE's 1-minute circuit data, SystemsLink's fuel coverage). Scoring weighs data granularity, device-level capability, fuels covered, bill validation, compliance exports and pricing transparency. Two other vendors on this list also sit inside competing energy consultancies, which we flag on their entries.

  1. 1.

Purely Insights (with Insights Real Time)

Best for: Any UK business that wants monitoring without a licence fee

The only platform on this list included free with your energy supply. Every supplier invoice is validated line by line against your contracted rate, SECR and ESOS Phase 4 exports are built in, and when it flags an overcharge our account team chases the credit note for you.

    Data granularity
Half-hourly electricity refreshed roughly 30 minutes after settlement; gas and water via AMR and billing data; live device-level views with Insights Real Time circuit sensors
    Device-level monitoring
Yes. Insights Real Time streams wireless sub-metering at circuit, sub-circuit and asset level, installed through our Elexon-accredited metering pipeline

  2. 2.

    ClearVUE.Zero

Best for: Energy-intensive manufacturers who want 1-minute circuit data

The strongest device-level proposition after Insights Real Time, with genuinely live circuit data. Worth knowing: ClearVUE.Business is the technology arm of Global Procurement Group, the same group as the Northern Gas and Power consultancy, so like Insights it sits inside an energy procurement business rather than a standalone software house.

    Data granularity
Live, down to 1-minute granularity from its own installed CT-clamp hardware; import of supplier half-hourly settlement data is not advertised
    Device-level monitoring
Yes, native. ClearVUE's own current-transformer hardware monitors individual circuits, machines and appliances
    Fuels
    Electricity, gas and water
    Price
Not published; bespoke packages, quote via demo
  3. 3.

    SystemsLink Energy Manager

Best for: Councils, NHS trusts, universities and consultant portfolios

The UK public-sector stalwart, in the market since the 1990s, with deep monitoring-and-targeting and bill-validation coverage across more fuels than anyone else here. Owned by Inspired PLC, a competing energy consultancy, since 2018.

    Data granularity
Half-hourly data on a day+1 basis, plus a live sensor option; the vendor cites 700,000+ meter points under management
    Device-level monitoring
Partly, via separately installed kit. SystemsLink is software-only: it ingests sub-meter and data-logger feeds but sells no sensors of its own
    Fuels
Electricity, gas, water, oil, LPG, biomass and waste
    Price
Not published; licence and package based, demo-led
  4. 4.

    Sigma (TEAM Energy)

Best for: Public-sector estates that want published pricing

A long-standing UK monitoring-and-targeting platform from an employee-owned company, popular with local authorities. Being on G-Cloud with a published price band is rarer than it should be in this sector.

    Data granularity
Near-real-time monitoring and targeting on imported half-hourly, AMR, BEMS and sub-meter data
    Device-level monitoring
Partly, via third-party feeds. Sigma ingests sub-meter, data-logger and IoT sensor data but TEAM sells no sensing hardware
    Fuels
    Electricity, gas and water
    Price
£1,995 to £100,000 a year per licence on the UK G-Cloud listing, one of the only published price ranges in this market
  5. 5.

    Stark ID

Best for: Multi-site portfolios that want the data collector and the analytics in one place

Stark is a licensed UK data collector and aggregator, so if Stark is already your appointed DC/DA the analytics platform is a natural fit. Not a live dashboard, but the settlement-grade data quality is the point.

    Data granularity
Day+1: collection runs overnight and data lands in Stark ID the following morning
    Device-level monitoring
Partly, via Stark's own sub-metering services (Stark Connect installs electricity sub-meters; gas via Stark Works)
    Fuels
    Electricity and gas
    Price
Not published for metering and data collection; Stark ID analytics access is bundled for its data-collection customers
  6. 6.

    Utilidex Energy.Hub

Best for: Corporates and suppliers focused on bill validation and procurement workflow

Strong at the commercial layer: bill validation, budgeting, flex procurement and tenant billing in one Azure-based hub used by suppliers as well as end users. If you need to see what an individual machine is doing, this is not the tool.

    Data granularity
Half-hourly settlement-grade meter data; no live sub-hourly display is advertised
    Device-level monitoring
No. Nothing below the utility meter (sub-meters, sensors, BMS integration) is advertised anywhere on the vendor's site
    Fuels
    Electricity, gas and water
    Price
Not published; modular SaaS subscription, modules activated per tier
  7. 7.

    MRI Energy (formerly eSight Energy)

Best for: Property owners and FM teams already in the MRI ecosystem

eSight was one of the UK's best-known energy management platforms before MRI Software acquired it in 2021; it now anchors MRI's energy offer with UK offices and a real-estate slant.

    Data granularity
Live dashboards via direct connections to meters, BMS and IoT devices (Modbus, OPC, oBIX), alongside imported utility data
    Device-level monitoring
Partly, hardware-agnostic: it ingests sub-meter, BMS and IoT feeds through 200+ integrations but sells no sensors of its own
    Fuels
Electricity, gas, water, steam and chilled water
    Price
    Not published; quote on request
  8. 8.

    Spacewell Energy (Dexma)

Best for: ESCOs, consultants and portfolio managers wanting a hardware-agnostic platform

A European platform (now part of Nemetschek Group's Spacewell) with a UK partner network and one of the widest integration catalogues in the market. Anomaly detection is genuinely strong; UK settlement-data ingestion is less documented than the UK-native tools.

    Data granularity
Near-real-time, typically 15-minute intervals via 200+ hardware and API integrations
    Device-level monitoring
Partly, via third-party hardware: circuit and asset-level data arrives through integrations from around 50 sensor vendors
    Fuels
Electricity, gas, water, heat and more
    Price
Not published; tiered subscription priced by data points (Entry, Advanced and up)
  9. 9.

    Energy Assets WebAnalyser

Best for: Multi-site estates that want metering, AMR and analytics from one UK provider

Energy Assets is one of the UK's largest independent metering businesses, so WebAnalyser suits estates that want the meter operation, the AMR and the reporting handled by the company that owns the meters.

    Data granularity
Half-hourly AMR data with detailed daily access rather than a live feed
    Device-level monitoring
Partly, via its own sub-meter installation services; no CT-clamp or BMS-level sensing is advertised
    Fuels
    Electricity, gas and water
    Price
    Not published
  10. 10.

    Socomec WEBVIEW / N'VIEW

Best for: Electrical infrastructure teams standardising on Socomec metering

A different animal to the SaaS platforms above: Socomec is a metering and power-equipment manufacturer, and its software shines where its DIRIS Digiware hardware is installed. Excellent for electrical infrastructure; less suited to bill validation or multi-supplier estates.

    Data granularity
Real-time electrical measurements from up to 200 connected devices per WEBVIEW instance
    Device-level monitoring
Yes, via its own hardware: the DIRIS Digiware multi-circuit metering system monitors circuits and sub-circuits below the incomer
    Fuels
Electricity natively; gas and water via pulse inputs
    Price
Not published; quotation via Socomec UK

The dividing line

Meter-level vs device-level: the question to ask every vendor

Most UK platforms, including capable ones like SystemsLink and Utilidex, work from your utility meters: half-hourly electricity and AMR gas. That is enough for bills, budgets and SECR. It cannot tell you that the spike at 2am was the compressor in unit 3, because the meter only sees the whole site.

Device-level monitoring puts sensors below the meter. Insights Real Time does this with wireless circuit-level sensors installed through our metering pipeline, streaming individual circuits, machines and floors into the same dashboard as your half-hourly supply data. ClearVUE.Zero does it with its own CT clamps at 1-minute resolution, and Panoramic Power built its whole product on self-powered sensors that clip onto the wire at the breaker (formerly a Centrica business, sold in February 2026). On the electrical-infrastructure side, Socomec's energy management software reaches circuit level through its DIRIS Digiware metering hardware.

If a vendor says "granular data", ask one question: whose sensors, on which circuits, at what cost? The honest answers split the market exactly as the tables on this page do.

What to look for

Six things best-in-class UK energy monitoring should do

The evaluation framework behind the ranking above. Use it to score any platform you are considering, including ours.

Half-hourly granularity, on every fuel

Anything coarser than half-hourly is for billing, not for action. Insist on half-hourly electricity and at least daily-resolution gas with hourly available where the meter supports it.

Device-level visibility where it matters

Meter-level data tells you a site spiked; device-level data tells you which machine did it. Check whether circuit sensors are the vendor's own hardware, a partner install, or not offered at all: the answers differ more than the brochures suggest.

Anomaly detection that actually pages someone

Static dashboards do not change behaviour. The platform should learn each meter's baseline and notify a named human within 24 hours of an unexplained spike, leak or out-of-hours run.

SECR, ESOS and GHG-ready exports

If your reporting team has to retype numbers, the system has failed. Look for SECR-aligned exports, GHG Protocol Scope 1 and Scope 2 splits, and tCO2e by site.

Bill-validation against contract terms

The single highest-ROI feature most platforms miss. Reconcile every supplier invoice against the contract rates and the half-hourly volume, flag the deltas, recover the difference.

Cross-site benchmarking for multi-location estates

Comparing similar sites against each other surfaces the worst performers within minutes. Look for kWh per m², kWh per opening hour and kWh per head benchmarks side by side.

The full landscape

Every energy monitoring platform a UK buyer will meet

The wider field, including the global building-management suites, the US platforms without a UK footprint, and the hardware-led systems. Where a product has been retired or its status could not be verified, the table says so instead of repeating an old brochure.

"Via hardware" means the software only holds device-level data when separately installed sensors feed it.

The money question

Why Insights is free when everything else is quote-only

Of the 24 vendors above, almost none publish a price. The structural comparison below explains the three funding models in the market, and why we give the platform away with the supply contract: better data improves how we buy energy for you, so charging for it separately would create the wrong incentive.

Who needs it

When energy monitoring stops being optional

Multi-site portfolios above 1 GWh

Once you cross roughly 1 GWh combined consumption, the cost of a single missed billing error or untreated out-of-hours run exceeds the cost of any decent monitoring platform. Insights pays for itself before you've recovered the second rogue invoice.

SECR or ESOS in scope

If you file SECR (250+ staff or £36m turnover and £18m balance sheet) or ESOS Phase 4, retyping numbers from supplier portals into your reporting template once a year is the wrong answer. See how we handle this on the carbon and compliance service.

Any business in a flex contract

If you trade tranches across the wholesale curve, the trading desk needs a forecast based on actual half-hourly consumption, not a Q4 invoice. No monitoring, no flex.

B-Corp, SBTi or net-zero target holders

Disclosure standards demand evidence. A monitoring platform with tCO2e exports per site and per fuel turns claims into proof, and proof is what auditors and investors want.

Energy monitoring: questions answered

What is the best energy monitoring software in the UK?

For most UK businesses we rank Purely Insights first, with the disclosure that it is our own platform: it is the only credible option included free with an energy supply contract, it validates every supplier invoice, and Insights Real Time adds device-level circuit monitoring that most rivals either do not offer (Utilidex) or only reach through separately installed hardware (SystemsLink, Sigma, MRI Energy). The strongest alternatives are ClearVUE.Zero for 1-minute circuit data on energy-intensive sites and SystemsLink for public-sector estates. The full scoring criteria are published on this page; check any platform against them before you sign.

What is business energy monitoring?

Business energy monitoring is the continuous collection of half-hourly (or finer) consumption data from a site's electricity, gas and water meters, presented through a platform that surfaces anomalies, validates supplier bills, and produces statutory reports such as SECR. Done well, it converts utility bills from a sunk cost into a managed cost.

What is device-level energy monitoring?

Device-level (or circuit-level) monitoring measures consumption below the utility meter, using clip-on current sensors or sub-meters on individual circuits, machines and assets. Meter-level data tells you the site used more energy overnight; device-level data tells you it was the compressor. In the UK market only a handful of platforms offer it natively, including Insights Real Time, ClearVUE.Zero and Panoramic Power's sensor system; many others, such as SystemsLink and Utilidex, work at utility-meter level unless separate hardware is installed.

Do I need energy monitoring for SECR?

Yes, in practice. SECR requires UK-registered companies with 250+ staff, or turnover above £36m and balance sheet above £18m, to disclose UK energy use, Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions, energy efficiency actions and an intensity ratio. A monitoring platform with SECR-aligned exports turns annual reporting from a 6-week scramble into a same-day download.

How much does business energy monitoring software cost in the UK?

Almost nobody publishes pricing: of the 24 vendors we checked in July 2026, only TEAM Energy's Sigma shows a public range (£1,995 to £100,000 a year on G-Cloud) and OpenEnergyMonitor publishes hardware prices. Standalone platforms typically quote per meter per year; hardware-led systems add sensor and installation costs. Purely Insights is included free with every Purely Energy supply contract because better data directly improves how we buy energy for you; there is no separate licence fee to recover.

How is energy monitoring different from a smart meter?

A smart meter (SMETS2) records and transmits half-hourly data. An energy monitoring platform takes that data, plus AMR readings on gas, plus any sub-metering you add, and runs analytics on it: baselines, alerts, bill validation, carbon reporting. The smart meter is the input; the monitoring platform is what you act on.

How long does it take to deploy energy monitoring across a portfolio?

From first call to first dashboard is typically 2 to 6 weeks, mostly waiting on the supplier to release HH data feeds. Most of the integration is on the supplier side, not the platform side. We have moved 50-site portfolios in under 4 weeks where MOP/DA/DC permissions are already on file.

Insights is free with every Purely supply contract

Everything the ranking above scores, including device-level Insights Real Time, without the per-meter licence fee the rest of the market charges. Included when you move your gas, electricity or water supply through us.
